All About the Recovery Bees Sponsorship Initiative

What is the Sponsorship Program?
The sponsorship program is a Recovery Bees initiative to match women in need with women who can and want to help. The women of our community come from all backgrounds and all walks of life, but we all have one common goal: to find and maintain a life of recovery and to help other women do the same. Whether you belong to a 12-step program,a medication maintenance program, or no program at all, we have women who could use your help.
What Does the Recovery Bees Sponsor Do?
The role of a Recovery Bees sponsor is all-inclusive. It differs from that of a typical AA or NA sponsor in that there is no step book, though we are working on or own Recovery Workbook that can help. The Recovery Bees Sponsor will first welcome her sponsee to the tribe, introduce her to the website, to the group, and to all the women in the program. She will be the sponsee’s first line of support and go-to person.

Being new to recovery, it can be difficult to reach out for help, or to know when it is necessary to reach out for help. It is the job of the sponsor to ensure that there is an open line of communication at all times. The sponsor will check in with the sponsee regularly; she may ask that her sponsee sends her a message or calls every day to recount her day. She may ask that her sponsee performs homework assignments such as participating in meetings, doing AA or NA stepwork, completes SMART Recovery worksheets, etc. This will largely depend on the sponsor’s background and what the sponsee feels she needs.

I'm Not an Addict. Can I Still be a Sponsor or Request a Sponsor?
Absolutely! Our members struggle with illnesses and issues from eating disorders to mental illness to trauma and addiction. Our goal is to provide the best support we can to every member and to match our sponsees with a sponsor who has a story like her own, who can best understand her and thus best help her.
What are the Requirements to Become a Recovery Bees Sponsor?
There are no real requirements for becoming a sponsor. You must be a member of Recovery Bees so you can participate in the chat groups and sponsor support groups. Sponsorship can be a difficult job and we want to ensure that all of our members are receiving the support they need. We can’t help others unless we are also helping ourselves.

We also ask that our sponsors support women whose history and background are most like their own. That is to say, a woman with a history of addiction will feel most comfortable with a woman who has also survived addiction and a woman who has survived abuse would feel most comfortable with a sponsor who has also survived abuse. We help those best who are or have been where we have been before. We know what it’s like and we can put ourselves in their shoes, because we used to wear them ourselves. This helps foster an environment of trust and security and understanding between the sponsor and sponsee.

What if I Can No Longer Be a Sponsor/What if I No Longer Want a Sponsor/What if I Want a Different Sponsor?
The relationship between a sponsor and sponsee is an important one. We want to ensure that our sponsors have the time and effort to give and are at their best; and we want to ensure that our sponsees are receiving the support they need.

If for any reason you wish to break the relationship and seek a new sponsor/sponsee or no longer wish to participate, simply send us an email and let us know. Explain the issue as best as you can so we can make a better match or improve the program. This is completely confidential. If you currently have a sponsor or sponsee, we won’t disclose the nature of the termination of relationship, we will simply inform her of the change.. No awkward conversations, no confrontation, no pressure. We want to help our members in the very best way we can.
