Being new to recovery, it can be difficult to reach out for help, or to know when it is necessary to reach out for help. It is the job of the sponsor to ensure that there is an open line of communication at all times. The sponsor will check in with the sponsee regularly; she may ask that her sponsee sends her a message or calls every day to recount her day. She may ask that her sponsee performs homework assignments such as participating in meetings, doing AA or NA stepwork, completes SMART Recovery worksheets, etc. This will largely depend on the sponsor’s background and what the sponsee feels she needs.
We also ask that our sponsors support women whose history and background are most like their own. That is to say, a woman with a history of addiction will feel most comfortable with a woman who has also survived addiction and a woman who has survived abuse would feel most comfortable with a sponsor who has also survived abuse. We help those best who are or have been where we have been before. We know what it’s like and we can put ourselves in their shoes, because we used to wear them ourselves. This helps foster an environment of trust and security and understanding between the sponsor and sponsee.
